The foundation of our University dates back to 1958 when the branch of Moscow Institute of Electronic Machine Building was set up in Vladimir. In 1969 it was transformed into the Vladimir Polytechnical Institute. Due to further achievements in the development of material-technical resources, academic activities and research the University was given the status of a Classical University in 1996. Nowadays its full name is Vladimir State University named after Alexander and Nikolay Stoletovs (VLSU). In 2017 the University got the status of the Flagship University. Vladimir State University is a leading university of the Vladimir region, the center of education, science and culture of the region, one of the largest universities in Central Russia.

Vladimir State University is a multi-profile classical university, which incorporates 11 Institutes and has the branch in Murom, the town of the Vladimir region. The university has a well-developed infrastructure: 10 academic and laboratory buildings, 11 student hostels, 17 research centers and different facilities for sports and recreation.

More than 20 000 students study on 154 training programs. The University has 1000 members of the research and teaching faculty. Among them there are 650 PhD holders and associate professors and 138 doctorate holders and full professors.
The University training programs cover all levels and areas of training. Here are the numbers of training programs including Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD and (senior) doctorate programs as well as prep-course and staff training programs.
Vladimir State University gives the opportunity to pursue a PhD or a doctorate. About 300 PhD candidates are enrolled into 52 programs in 21 fields of training. 5 Dissertation Councils works at the University where PhD candidates can have their thesis defense.
Vladimir State University is a leading research center of the Vladimir region, which unites 17 scientific schools and 17 scientific educational centers and laboratories. Research is carried out in 48 areas of 11 fields of science. The University successfully participates in international programs and projects. The University is given grants of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
Professors, scholars, students and postgraduates of Vladimir State University are the participants of international, all-Russian and regional research forums, conferences and festivals, the winners of different contests and competitions.
